Charles Alfred Crittenden was awarded a Certificate of Competence as a Master of a Passenger Steamer in the minor inland waters. It is dated the 19th of March 1903. The information I received from a cousin of mine named David Crittenden states:
"He was a quarter master on the Scotia at one time among many other jobs he did. The original certificate is with Everett's sister Andrea in new Glasgow apparently it is on sheepskin."
I also found a note in some other information. My cousin sent me that said the following.
"Occupation, Master Mariner, ferry boat quartermaster on the Scotia. Earned Master Mariners papers certificate number 3958 awarded after exam passed at Sydney Nova Scotia, August 16, 1902 certificate awarded by the minister of Marine and Fisheries for the Dominion of Canada dated 19th day of March 1903 qualified to fulfill the duties of Master of a passenger steamer in the minor inland waterways."
It's not really clear if there were two certificates or if this note is just explaning a two step process to received the Master Mariners Certificate. The copy of the certificate I have is not numbered.
There is no indication that I have seen that confirmed that Charles Alfred Crittenden ever actually Mastered a passenger steamer. Seems he was employed as a Quarter-master.
The sources that describe Charles Alfred Crittenden as a fisherman are dated between 1881 and 1884. The Masters certificate is dated 1903.
It looks like Charles Alfred Crittenden was a fisherman earlier in his life and then became a mariner (Quarter master) with a Masters certification later in his life. |
