Excerpt of John Chandlers visit to Barbados in 1849 as arespresentative of British and Foreign Anti-slave Society. December5, 1849 "Rose early and drove out to the Rectory of St.John's....Thirteen miles to breakfast, and met there Henry PilgrimPolice Magistrate, and John Gittens, a Planter, son of J.R. Gittensthe Rector. After breakfast we were taken by this hospitable family[for] a lovely ride to Codrington College. The principal of theColege R. Rawle AM., who is now in England, is a warm and energeticfriend to the education of the Poor and devotes his time and substanceto support and extend it. We visitd his three schools on the Cliffwhich overhangs the College and looks on the sea. The schools forBoys Girls and Infants are all seperate, and all good: they have goodteachers and the instruction given is of a superior kind to that ofthe Barbados schools generally. The number of scholars is 375: thepayment demand is for one scholar ten pence a month, for two scholarsfifteen pence and for three or more of the same family twenty pence.About one forth of the children are admitted free by virtue of thestatus of Codrington College. The Rectory of the Parish has also aschool of his own, containing eighty children. In the course of theday Bishop Parry and his wife called at the Rectory to see us andconverse with us, as also the Cjief Justice Sir Bowcher Clarke. Inthe afternoon four horses were brought to the dor, for the ectory andhis son, GWA and myself, and we took a delightful ride to HackletonsCliff which affords us an extensive view of the hilly parts of theisland. On returning we called at Mount Tabor a station of theMoravians, but the Minister J.G. Tippell was gone out, and we did notstop, but met him the next morning. Dined at 1/2 past 6 o'clock andwre joined by the Chief Justice and his eldest daughter. Maria and Idrove to the Cliff Plantation the residence of Henry Pilgrim to lodge" |
